FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team closed out the preseason slate with a 1-1 tie against Evansville on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the Shindigz Soccer Festival, held at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne's Hefner Field. Senior Justin Meram (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) scored U-M's lone goal in the 60th minute.
Evansville struck first with a goal off a rebound on a free kick, but, after slicing through two Evansville defenders, Meram tied the game for the Wolverines with a shot from 15 yards out.
Several of Michigan's freshmen gained valuable playing time, including freshman forward Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill), who scored a goal in the 68th minute that was disallowed. Sophomore forward Hamoody Saad (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn) also hit a free kick from 30 yards out that the Evansville goalkeeper struggled with, but the Wolverines were unable to collect the rebound.
The Wolverines open the 2010 regular season on Wednesday (Sept. 1) when they welcome in-state rival Detroit to the new U-M Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
