2-1 Victory over Detroit in Home Opener
As the teams took the field at the start of the match, a heavy downpour added to the atmosphere. It also set the tone for a very scrappy match with players falling over left and right. Sliding was a key part of the match. Both teams were slipping, losing their balance and sliding to pass the ball. I was very impressed by the control several players had while sliding for the ball.
These conditions in part led to Detroit Forward Otieno Victor's early departure from the game by receiving two yellow cards, leading to a red and ejection from the game.
Michigan held most of the play, however scoring chances were few. The first goal was off a free kick. In the 28th minute, Soony Saad (Freshman) took a great shot on net and the crowd erupted.
Detroit pulled one back early in the second half, however I have no clue how it was scored cause my back was turned trying to get information from fans.
When overtime began, the student section began to really make noise, with a lot of help from the women's soccer team and Dearborn High team. The encouragement and cheering when Hamoody Saad (Sophomore) scored and the crowd erupted again. Following the team's celebration they came over to thank the fans.
Comment on the refereeing, it was atrocious. The field conditions did not make it easy on them, but both teams were playing very physical and not nearly enough calls were made. Several players were clearly hacked but nothing was done. Hopefully next time we won't need to see more of that.
More official report and pictures coming soon!
