Record Numbers Come to Watch UM v ND game
3,503.
That was the attendance to Friday's game against Notre Dame. Capacity is supposed to be 2,200. Incredible.
To be honest, I was completely blown away by the crowd, and was so sucked into making a good atmosphere, I didn't even watch most of the game. Throughout the game I was genuinely concerned about the result of the game. If we would have scored, especially in the Golden Goal overtime, the place would have exploded. On the dedication night of the stadium, the fans would have destroyed it.
As the final seconds were ticking away, I felt the collective deep breath from every fan as Soony teed up a shot, but unfortunately it was much higher than he wanted, and a sigh of disappointment followed as the result was just out of reach.
So it ended in a tie. the teams' third OT game of the season, which having so many so early in the season concerns me. Stamina is a huge issue in soccer and as players get tired they are more prone to injury. Thankfully we have not encountered that yet.
The offense has been off of their finishing touch. While we are tallying 20+ shots for each game, we haven't scored more than twice in a game. Our defense is holding us in each game by only allowing 7 goals in 9 games, several of them off of sloppy rebounds as opposed to defensive breakdowns. Once as the forwards start finishing, the team should be unstoppable.
Not saying there have not been points of brilliance, cause there definitely have been, but more consistency is needed. Goals win games, not shots. We take enough that it is time we score.
The Oakland game was great. We found the net twice (Soony on a header, Meram placing it around the keeper) in the 2-1 victory. The final goal by Meram came as the clock was running low. Wood had an assist on both goals. We had a small group of Ultras, but it was a loud and energetic crowd.
Marquette was yesterday. It ended in a 1-1 tie. The Live Blog was less than informative so I'll refer you to the official game report.
Two games this week: Kentucky on Wednesday, OSU Saturday. Both games are at 7PM. See you there!
